Does it matter, where you place your AdSense? This Google AdSense tutorial will give you some straight answers.
Q: Where's the best spot to put my AdSense units?
A: If you're looking for one single answer to that question, it's: above the fold.
This expression is a graphic design concept, and if you can imagine yourself reading a newspaper, standing in a bus or train, you'll know what I'm talking about.
In order to read the newspaper comfortably, you'll have to fold it on the middle, and what you're reading, what you're seeing, is above the fold.
On a homepage, everything that's above the fold is what you can see in the browser, without having to scroll.
This is where most of your adverts should be placed. You cannot expect your visitors to scroll down to watch your ads.
Q: Okay, so I put my ads above the fold. Anything else, I should know about?
A: Yes, in general, you should put your ads on the spots, people are looking at.
If you do a search for 'Google AdSense heat map', you'll see Google's official answer to the question: Where should I place Google ads on my site.
These are the areas, in general, that most people will be looking at, and these areas are therefore, the best to place your ads in.
Notice, how I wrote 'in general', because you should always do testing and tweaking on your own site. Not two sites are equal, and what works on one page doesn't necessarily work on another.
Q: Should I put a large rectangle directly below the headline and let it stand-alone? Or should I wrap the text around it?
A: Here again, you have to test what works best on your site. On my sites, my ads performed better in general, when I had the text wrapped around them. This is not always the case, and it's not always possible to do so, anyway.
Some people claim that they've earned more by having the large rectangle stand alone below the headline. Some put one line of text first, then the advert, and then the rest of the text.
Test it yourself on your site or blog. This is the only way, you'll know what performs better for you.
Q: What about link units. Aren't they just a waste of space?
A: Oh, no. Definitely not. On some of my sites, these are the units that make me the biggest income.
